Cathedral Questions New Nightclub

9 August 2006

The Anglican Church has raised questions about the proposed new nightclub next door to St David's Cathedral in Hobart.

The Cathedral has been asking the tenant for some weeks for details of their proposed new business activities but has not yet received any formal reply to these requests. A further request has been made today.

The Dean of the Cathedral, Dr Lindsay Stoddart said that the Cathedral was concerned by recent media reports about the new club. He said, "The tenants have signed a lease which includes moral covenants and restrictions on use. If the media reports are accurate, it appears the new venture is in breach of the lease. The Cathedral is seeking legal advice."

Dr Stoddart said, "The Cathedral will comply with its obligations under the lease. However, the church retains its right to insist that the tenant also complies with its terms which include the provision not to use the premises for purposes that may offend the community."
