20 May 2005
The Bishop of Tasmania, The Right Reverend John Harrower, today spoke to the annual Tasmanian Anglican Synod about his vision for the future of the Church in 2010.
Bishop Harrower told the Synod that he was very pleased to see people and local churches across Tasmania taking up the challenge to transform the Anglican Church for the 21st century.
He said, 'Early in 2004 I spoke of our vision to see a growing and vibrant Anglican Church by the year 2010. Im excited to report on what I've seen since that time.
'There have been a number of new congregations started in the last 18 months, from Somerset to Hobart, which are increasingly reaching people who have not been a part of the church. These new congregations and other new youth and childrens groups are beginning to see more and more young people and families becoming a part of the Anglican community.
'I have also seen creative new ways of churches serving their local communities, such as the Backyard Angels project which cares for needy people in the West Tamar area, by cleaning their yards.'
Bishop Harrower also spoke of his delight at seeing groups of local churches, and other Anglican organisations beginning to work together more as teams in wider areas, such as the Eastern shore of Hobart.
'Today I believe that we have made a good beginning for a transformed Anglican Church. I continue to hold out the challenge ahead of the Church as we look with hope towards 2010.'
