Confirmation
Last updated 20 December 2001
Introduction
In recognition of the on-going discussion about Christian initiation these guidelines are issued, not as a definitive set of instructions but a way forward at this time. It is the desire of the Bishop that discussion and consultation should be continued in this matter so that the sharing of ideas will help in the forming of active and involved church members.
Guidelines
- Rectors and Chaplains act with the authority of the Bishop and have the responsibility to prepare candidates and to decide at what age to present them for Confirmation.
- The focus of Confirmation preparation should be the challenge of deciding to follow Christ in daily living within the fellowship of the Church.
- Education in the life and practice of the Church must be regarded as a vital part of this preparation.
- Spiritual maturity of life and genuine personal intention of the candidate will be assessed by the presenting priest as an essential element of such preparation, i.e. due care should be taken to ensure as far as possible that it is the desire of the candidate not some other person, which is being assessed.
- Schools and parishes need to consult and find the best way forward to ensure continuity of spiritual nurture after the student leaves school. It is advisable to link the parish and the school together as much as possible in a co-operative spirit especially in regard to church membership.
Conclusion
We need to be able to say to potential candidates, 'In view of all that you are already doing, we can see that your baptism is being confirmed by your actions. We look forward to you being confirmed.'
